As the May afternoon
turned to twilight, McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Beach
Park transformed into an elegant setting for the 2007
Ka Palapala Po`okela book awards ceremony. |

Committee members Bev Motz (Bess Press) and
Elisa Seaman (Booklines Hawaii/Islander Group) still
looked fresh and luminous after working to set up for
the event on a very humid day. |

Entertainment included
Keith & Carmen Haugen with Frank Uehara and
kumu hula Maelia Loebenstein Carter’s Ka Pa Hula
O Kauanoe O Wa`ahila, with music by Aaron Sala.
Mapuana De Silva (shown on stage) also danced
with the halau, creating a graceful frame for the
display of nominated books. |

Block-print artist
Caren Loebel-Fried received the Award of Excellence
in both Children’s Literature and Children’s Hawaiian
Culture for Lono and the Magical Land Beneath the Sea
(Bishop Museum Press). |

Law professor Randy
Roth and senior U.S. District Court judge Samuel
King were honored for Broken Trust
(University of Hawai‘i Press), which won the Samuel
M. Kamakau Award for Hawai‘i Book of the Year. The
book also received the top award in the Nonfiction
category and an honorable mention in Hawaiian Culture. |

Author Karen Anderson
accepted the Award of Excellence in the category of
Special-Interest Books for The Hawai‘i Home Book
(Watermark Publishing). |

Lua: Art of the
Hawaiian Warrior
(Bishop Museum Press) was the winner in the Hawaiian
Culture and Design categories. Two of the book’s
coauthors, Richard Paglinawan and Moses
Kalauokalani, posed with designer Julie Chun. |

HBPA president Ron Cox
(Bishop Museum Press) and Bev Motz (Bess Press)
thanked Kirk Matthews, KHON morning anchor, for
emceeing the awards presentation. Guest speaker Tom
Moffatt also added a professional edge to the
ceremony with his well-received talk on his fifty years
in the entertainment industry. |

congratulated designer Barbara Pope on receiving the
John Dominis Holt Award for excellence in book
publishing. Shown are Buddy Bess, Maile Meyer,
Meleana Meyer, Barbara Pope, Elizabeth
Lee, Maureen Liu-Brower, Tia Reber,
and Christopher Puttock. Dr. Puttock co-wrote and
designed Hawai‘i Wetland Field Guide (Bess
Press), winner in the Natural Science category. |

and Kihei De Silva, coauthors of Lena Machado,
Songbird of Hawai‘i (Kamehameha Publishing), shared
their pleasure in receiving the Honorable Mention in
Special-Interest Books with Mapuana De Silva and

recipient Barbara Pope has designed and produced
dozens of the best books published in Hawai‘i, including
many past Ka Palapala Po`okela winners. |

Graphic designer Hans
Loffel and nationally published children’s book
author/artist James Rumford enjoyed the reception
before the next day’s Hawai‘i Book & Music Festival.
Hans received a 2006 Honorable Mention in the
now-discontinued category of production. Jim Rumford’s
2007 book, Beowulf: A Hero’s Tale Retold
(Houghton Mifflin) has received glowing reviews in Horn
Book and Publishers Weekly. |

At the end of the evening,
HBPA members Angie Britten (formerly with Mutual
Publishing, now with Bishop Museum), George
Engebretson (Watermark Publishing), Makana Risser
Chai (Hawaiian Insights), Elisa Seaman (Booklines
Hawaii), and Ron Cox (Bishop Museum Press)
celebrated another successful awards ceremony. |

many authors, illustrators, designers, publishers, and
others in the Hawai‘i book community for a great evening
of camaraderie and recognition. |
